Brooks Island is located in San Francisco Bay, only about 600 meters from the Richmond shoreline. Brooks Island had been used by the Ohlone people for thousands of years as a seasonal or permanent site. The Ohlone shellmound on Brooks Island include remains of marine birds, mammals and fish.

The island hosts Black Oystercatchers as well as a colony of Caspian Terns and has many other wildlife values. The island is now part of the East Bay Regional Park system and the public may visit by appointment with the District.
